No, No. You are absolutely right, especially with snakes. It’s their way of warning us that we are too close and we need to back off. We should not invade their personal space. I mean how would you feel if something more then ten times bigger then you scares you and gets way too close to you. You would obviously defend yourself as the snake does, or any animal does in that matter. To respect an animal is to give them their personal space.

Tigers especially need our help. Due to poaching and habitat destruction, they are loosing their numbers fast. Amber, I think that would be a great choice to study tigers and to prove to people that they are not mindless killing machines, especially since the case of the guy that was killed in the San Francisco Zoo by Tatiana, the Siberian tiger. Personally I believe it was that guys fault. So many people come to zoos and taunt the animals instead of learning about them and appreciating their beauty. I believe poor Tatiana had enough of this and went after this guy and his friends. Anyways, if you study in that field, that would be a great help in understanding tiger behavior and their conservation.

If you are truley dedicated to the animals you want to work with, and if you work hard, I think it would be very rewarding working with more then one type of animal.

Not really. If you really want to work with more then one animal that would be great. Take Jeff Corwin for example. Usually you see him working with reptiles but actually I believe he got his phD studying bats. I love elephants but I am also facinated by primates, big cats, wild canids, African ungulates (large hoofed herbivores), just to name a few. I know at your age you would change your mind a lot (I was like that too and sometimes I still am). Once you get into college, maybe you would find the right animal(s) to work with.

Amber, I dont think that you should want to work with an animal just because you want to meet one of your heros who work with that particular animal. People like Jane Goodall, Jeff Corwin, or Steve Irwin work (or worked) with those animals becuase they have a deep passion for them. You should first follow your heart and see what animals you are passionate about and you still would have chance to meet your hero. I have a great passion for elephants but Jane Goodall is my hero and I really want to meet her someday. I hope you understand what I mean. Follow what your passionate about becuase when you do that, just as Jane, Jeff, or Steve have so many people looking up to them, someday people would look up to you. Follow your heart.

Well I too pretty much love all kinds of animals. But once I started volunteering at my local zoo working with their elephants, I just happened to follow the path of wanting to study and work with elephants. I guess it was meant to be. See when I started volunteering, every month my shift had to be changed to another section of animals. I started out with birds, then primates, large carnivores, hoof stock, reptiles, and then I was put with the Asian elephants. By accident, the zoo forgot to shift me the next month but I loved working with the elephants so much I told them I actually would love to just stay in the elephant section. I guess it was my calling. So Amber basically I am trying to tell you that you will know what animal you want to work with when it comes to you. Try to volunteer at a local zoo, an animal rehabilitation center, you know places like that and you just might find your path. I mean, Dr. Goodall was not sure what animal she was going to end up studying and protecting. Her dream was to go to Africa to study animals. By chance, she got the opportunity of a lifetime to go and work with chimpanzees. So in time you will know. I guess thats the best advice I can give you Amber. Best of Luck!

Hi Amber,
Thats pretty cool you want to major in Herpetology and Mammalogy. They are a wonderful career choice and if you love animals as much as I (I know you love animals like me from your list of favorite animals) your career would feel like a dream come true instead of just work. So you live in Australia. I have always wanted to travel there. Anyways, keep in touch.

Profile Information

About Me:
Hello, I am Amber. I'm not good at writing about myself but here goes.
I love animals, it's so hard to pick my favorite. I am very passionate about Tigers and Chimps. I want to help find a way to put a stop to illegal pet trades and all forms of animal cruelty. I am also a very sporty person. I do Karate, Athletics and Surf Life Saving, and on my days off, if I'm not snorkeling or camping, I am usually running around with my mates having fun =D .... I play music also. I am best at drums, but I am also pretty good at guitar, bass and piano. I, apparently, am also a talented writer, and I write poems and the occasional song......

When I finish school, I would love nothing more then to become a Zoologist and help research, rescue and protect endangered species. I am a big fan of the outdoors, anything from slopping around in mud puddles with my dogs to swimming in the deep blue with the never ending fascinations of the underwater world.

So, this is basically me. There is a lot more to me then I have written, but I guess if we ever meet, you can find that out for yourself.. I guess you could say that I am one big ball of surprises.

If you want to know more about me, please feel free to ask.
