Profile Information

About Me:
I am a cultural anthropologist and I teach several sections of Introduction to Non-Western Cultures. I also have two beautiful boys, one of which my husband and I welcomed just this year and the other went off to preschool last month. I sampled all the sub-disciplines of anthropology as an undergraduate student at Western Michigan University and spent a summer studying abroad at Stirling University when I was a young woman (19 years old). Although I am a teacher, I continue to study human behavior, animal conservation and cross-cultural solutions. I hope to be a life-long student in these pursuits.

I became familiar with Dian Fossey's research and work with gorillas as well as Jane Goodall's work with Chimpanzees at a young age and I owe a huge debt to these pioneering women as role models in the field of anthropology. At the age of ten, I was certain that some day I would become a primatologist. Later in life I heard Dr. Paul Farmer speak on health as a human right and he inspired me to pursue medical anthropology. I often feel that I would have enjoyed working as a primatologist but I have no regrets in pursuing medical anthropology as I have a strong passion for this sub-field as well. I enjoyed my master's program at Northern Arizona University; where I studied applied applications of anthropology, international development policies and branched out from medical anthropology into public health.

I conducted the research for my thesis in the Andes of Peru focusing on birth in a small clinical setting and ethno-medical healing among curanderos in the community. I have a passion for all life; especially the vulnerable in our world. I believe it is a worthy aspiration to provide animals with nutritious food, clean water, quality health care and safe places to live/safe homes for raising healthy offspring-- that belief encompasses all animals (including Homo sapiens). Optimism guides my work, my goals, my family and my life. Through this lens, I am able to have hope in our world and faith in humanity.

Jane Goodall is an inspiring and intelligent woman who has motivated many people, including me, to get more involved in conservation efforts and connect with others who have a similar philosophy about life.

Update: I have to post some very exciting information: I booked tickets (today) to fly over to California and attend Dr. Jane Goodall's lecture in Berkeley on October 1st, thus fulfilling (with my husband's encouragement to go and leave our babies with him) a life-long goal to meet her in person. I'll post photos upon my return for all to see!

Hi,
I am new to the network too, and I just had the opportunity to star writing on my page. I love cultures too and travel, but not as a tourist because you do not really get a sense of how the culture really is.
