Letter Exchange,
I am attending the Global summit next week. When the summit perticapents first began talking online via Facebook I aksed one member from the Lugufu Refugee campin in Kigoma Tanzania if their group would like to do a letter exchage, we both decided this would be a great way to connect member that could not meet at the summit. I set up a table outside our lunch room to collect letters and drawings from the students and professors as they waited in line to eat. We ended up with 50 letters after just one day. This was one really simple event that can be done anywhere, and works well to connect youth across the globe.
I'd love to hear about other projects that are going on at colleges.
It pains me so much that there are no Root & Shoot Program in Nigerian schools.I hope to change this after the Summit,...i am sure the Institute will support this move.It is my desire that young Nigerians join this great movement for a better world.
I believe that many students enrolled in colleges and universities would be very interested in starting a Roots & Shoots program on their campuses. I am a student at Tarleton State University and know friends and classmates that would be active members if we had such a program. What is the best way to begin and how does it work? There are so many people that are college age and that are passoinate about social change today. Colleges and Universities around the world would no doubt be a wonderful media for Roots & Shoots. I think it is very worth pushing - Jeanette
Hi Jeanette! Starting a Roots & Shoots group is fairly simple. Just go to www.rootsandshoots.org and click on Sign Up Now, you will be able to chose from among 3 different membership types. Make sure you check out the College Students portion of the website, and you can contact the College and University Programs office directly through the website.
You group works however you want it to. You can meet as often as you like and you can focus your projects on areas your group members are interested in.
You are so right. There are a ton of College and University students getting involved today. We have a lot of them participating in Roots & Shoots too. If you want to get your school involved definitely check out our website. Also know too that we have staff that work on helping and supporting college and university students in doing Roots & Shoots on campus. I am the Roots & Shoots Program Coordinator for University Programs and Youth Leadership. I would love to connect with you so that we could talk more about gettting a group going at your school. Feel free to contact me through this site, and also feel free to email me at ssweeney@janegoodall.org. Great to hear from you and learn about your energy and enthusiasm.
