About Roots & Shoots

The Roots & Shoots program is about making positive change happen—for our communities, for animals and for the environment. And it all starts with you! With tens of thousands of young people in almost 100 countries, the Roots & Shoots network branches out across the globe, connecting youth of all ages who share a common desire to help make our world a better place. This powerful, youth-driven network fosters a fun, flexible and supportive environment where young people and adults alike come together to share ideas and inspiration, implement successful community service projects and participate in special events and global campaigns.

Hi Corinne,
I am Anne, an R&S leader in Arizona, USA. The balloon idea is neat, but I have heard that deflated helium balloons can be a hazard to animals, especially marine life. Why not use the R&S network to plan an exchange with other groups. Your could send origami peace cranes to groups or be even more environmentally friendly and send virtual peace messages by email. Good luck!

Good morning everybody!
My name is Corinne and join the R&S activities in Holland. For the 21th September (world peace day) we like to organize an activity whih connects with activities in other countries where R&S activity take place. We are thinking of making balloons with a written message on it and let those balloons fly on a exact hour of tat day. Are there any other ideas? It would be very nice to let the activities of R&S connect that day with every country.

Here is an idea for any old clothing you may have...Sew a reusable bag. I am sure everyone has a sewing kit somewhere in their house, and it is an easy craft to pick up, so sew. Just cut an old shirt, pair of pants, etc. up, and use the scraps, to save money, plastic and paper, and to do a handy little craft that allows you to be hands on.

Cotton reusable shopping bags are now available at 10 bags for $40 (includes shipping and handling) from Resources for Health Roots & Shoots! We hope that this lower price and smaller quantity of bags will help fulfill the vision of the R&S leaders who conceived of the campaign to enable groups to focus on environmental activism first and fundraising second. With the blank space in the center of the bags, groups have the opportunity to screen print the logos of local green sponsors onto bags, thereby reducing costs while promoting environmentally friendly businesses . Our group has been doing Pollution Solutions, our reusable bag project, since 2005. We have learned a lot over the years, and the project continues to evolve. Please check out our project at the Pollution Solutions blog on our website www.resourcesforhealth.org. You can even view “A Story About Shopping Bags” slideshow, one of the latest additions to our project, which has really helped us explain our passion to the community. When you purchase bags, you have the option of receiving a CD of the presentation with your order. We will be happy to share what we have learned over the years and also look forward to learning more about your projects. Together we are making a difference! Let’s continue to rid our communities and our world of disposable shopping bags. Choose to reuse! Anne & family, Resources for Health R&S

I have just started a Roots & Shoots group in Bozeman, Montana. We are very small, but we hope to raise awareness one step at a time. Our first campaign will involve making shopping bags and decorating them. Does anyone have any ideas?

It pains me so much that there are no Root & Shoot Program in Nigerian schools.I hope to change this after the Summit,...i am sure the Institute will support this move.It is my desire that young Nigerians join this great movement for a better world.
